NSPS and Wall Thickness Explained

Check Stainless Steel Pipe Dimensions & Size in Kg, PDF & in Meter. The Nominal Steel Pipe Size (NSPS) is a standardized North American system of determining the diameter of pipes when used in high- and low-pressure systems. Though the NPS value is a nominal reference of pipe diameter, it is not the actual internal or external measurement. The actual inside diameter and the pressure-handling capacity of the pipe are instead determined by the Schedule (Sch.) number like Sch. 40, Sch. 80, or Sch. 160. As an example, Two NPS 6 Sch. 40 (or NPS 6 Sch. 80) Pipes have the same outside diameter but with varying wall thicknesses, which leads to a difference in the flow capacity and pressure rating.

This system provides standardization throughout the industries with the pipes, fittings, and flanges compatible for use whilst being flexible in their application to Oil and Gas, Water Supply, Chemical Processing, and Electrical Power Generation Industries. Using a combination of NSPS and wall thickness requirements, industries are able to be safe, efficient, and meet the requirements of ASME, ASTM, and ISO standards.

Nominal Steel Pipe Size (NSPS)

The Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) system is crucial in bringing consistency and accuracy to the design of pipes used in the oil and gas sector, petrochemicals, water supply, and power generation, among others. In contrast to real pipe dimensions, NPS offers a nominal size that standardizes pipe identification. In contrast, a Schedule (Sch.) number appears to ascertain the wall thickness to fulfill diverse pressure and temperature conditions. To give an example, the outside diameter is the same in an NPS 4 Sch.

40 pipe and an NPS 4 Sch. 80 pipe, but they differ in wall thickness and internal flow capacity. The NPS system also allows flexibility to select the appropriate wall thickness to meet the industrial safety and performance standards by maintaining a constant outside diameter, which allows it to be compatible with fittings, flanges, and valves.

Nominal Bore (NB)

The Nominal Bore (NB), also known as NB pipe size, is a standardized method of specifying the approximate interior pipe diameter of pipes in industrial piping. NB pipe sizes, whether 100 NB pipe, 150 NB pipe, or 200 NB pipe, are commonly known as standard pipe sizes under the ISO standards and the EN standards of global consistency. The Nominal Bore System assists engineers and buyers in choosing the appropriate NB pipe dimensions, pipe fittings, flanges, and valves, and compatibility with different pipe wall thicknesses and schedules of different pipes.

NB pipes are important in the oil and gas industry, chemical processing, water treatment, and construction by simplifying the process of sizing, procurement, and designing pipes. Nominal Bore Pipes are used to ensure interchangeability and safety, and adherence to international standards of industrial pipes.

Outside Diameter (OD)

Outside Diameter (OD) describes the pipe external measurement and is constant for all pipe size, also abbreviated as NPS. The OD is the size by which the pipe is described and it does not vary with the schedule or thickness of the pipe’s wall.

Wall Thickness

Wall Thickness of a pipe is the distance between the inside and outside of the pipe, which directly affects the strength, pressure rating, and life of the pipe. In piping systems, the thickness of the wall is often given as a Schedule (Sch.) number, like Sch. 40, Sch. 80, or Sch. 160, indicating the thickness of pipe walls of a specific Nominal Steel Pipe Size (NPS) or Nominal Bore (NB). An illustration is that a 6-inch NPS Sch. 40 pipe and a 6-inch NPS Sch. 80 pipe will have the same outside diameter but differing wall thickness, which will lead to different flow capacity and pressure holding.

The choice of the appropriate wall thickness of the pipes is essential in the oil and gas industry, chemical processing industry, water treatment facility, and power plant, and it should meet the requirements of the ASME, ASTM, and ISO standards. Proper wall thickness improves the safety, performance, and life of industrial piping systems.
